New information has emerged regarding actress Ruby Rose’s unexpected departure from the lead role of Kate Kane in The CW’s “Batwoman” series just after the first season finished airing this week.
TV Line reports that the decision was a mutual one, the actress wanted off and the network had no problem with that.
A source for the outlet says Rose, who had mostly been doing features before this her first full-time series gig (previously she had only guest or short-stint recurring roles), was distressed by the long hours demanded of the role and had not acclimated well to life in Vancouver where the show is shot:
“It wasn’t 100% her decision. It was a breakup. She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned, if they parted ways. It just wasn’t a good fit.”
Rose landed the role in August 2018, following a brief search for an out LGBTQ actress to portray the famously gay vigilante. Within a week, Rose had experienced a wave of backlash. She also underwent emergency surgery after herniating two discs – the injury coming close to severing her spinal cord and leaving her in chronic pain. That injury apparently didn’t have anything to do with the decision.
The new season is not slated to premiere until January 2021
